Sacred Storytelling

“Sacred Storytelling” is a 45-minute play designed to engage high school students in interfaith conversations. 

Written and produced by Jeffrey Steiger of the UM’s CRLT program, the play contains the words of over a 100 high school students from ten different religious backgrounds.  Interviews were held, comments were recorded and a script was written.  Combined with a PowerPoint presentation, “Sacred Storytelling” gives students the chance to express who they are and what confronts them, while at the same time hearing responses from many others to the same issues and concerns.

Behind the play are the issues of:

What did we hear? What did we assume? What stereotypes were brought to our attention? What does it take to overcome prejudice? How can we build better bridges of friendship and understanding? What does “harmony” look like?

The play works best with students from a variety of religious backgrounds.  Often a single religious youth group will invite three or more youth groups from other faith traditions to host an event together.  Whatever the approach, the conversations are most rewarding when there’s a mix and variety of religious students in the room.  The Round Table offers its assistance in contacting other groups and youth leaders.

Costs
Our maximum fee is $500 per performance.  When it is possible to schedule two or more events close together (and therefore save on rehearsal time), groups can often share costs that can reduce the fee to $400 per performance, and in some cases, even to $300.  These amounts and arrangements are discussed with each interested group.
